First Day of Summer Term

What a perfect day to welcome summer... with my first day of class. lol It's actually my favorite professor teaching the second part of my favorite class: Music: Civilization. It's a humanities class with an emphasis on music. I love it and the professor! Class was supposed to be 2 1/2 hours long today, but because the textbooks aren't in yet, it was only a half hour. I got to spend the rest of my day ticking random things off my to-do list. I did my first assignment for my D&C class, which is tomorrow at 9. Woo! I also made flashcards with my girl's pictures on them so I can learn their names fast. I calendared my homework assignments and cleaned the bathroom counter which was disgusting. haha.

We had ward FHE tonight and it was a delicious dinner of sloppy joes! Yum! I met a couple new girls, and started talking to Britain, one of the girls in my building, a little more. She's a vocal performance major, and sings beautifully. She's also a senior and like 2 years older than me, but I like her a lot. I love our bishopric, they are just so fun and funny. I left right before we played a game, which I suspected was "Duck, Duck, Goose" like the last time I was in their ward.

I have my first roving shift tonight as an RA. I get to walk around Wyview for the next 4 hours until midnight and check that things are ok. Oh boy! lol I hope it goes quickly, because I am ready for bed! :)

Still love and miss you all! <3

Back in the 81st Ward!

Last night after we came back from Walmart after midnight, DaNae dropped me off at my apartment and we said goodnight, then she took our other friend, Ashley, home. I got a call from DaNae a little before 1, saying she was locked out of her apartment at Glenwood, and she wondered if she could crash at my place for the night. I said sure, not really thinking about it. Then she shows up and says, "Sorry, I know you're supposed to fill out a guest form and stuff, but thanks for letting me stay." Then I freaked on the inside. I was supposed to get hall advisor permission and permission from my roommate (who was already asleep at this point) before I could have an overnight guest. I couldn't exactly kick DaNae out, and I didn't want to call and bother the hall advisor, so I just let her stay. They can charge you $40 a night for having an unregistered guest, so I was a little worried about that, but I hope things work out. I'm going to talk to my hall advisor and tell her what happened, just because I don't want to be doing anything behind her back, and ask if that was wrong of me to do, and what I should have done instead, and what to do if that ever happens to any of my girls. It's just a lot of stress and whatever, especially since I have to be the example and enforce the rules with other girls.

I woke up this morning going crazy trying to figure out what ward I am in and when church met. It took a few hours, but I finally hear I was in the 81st Ward, which I was in Fall and Winter, too, and that it was meeting at noon. Perfect-- lots of time to sleep in :) I showed up at church and realized that it's the same bishopric as I had before, too, and I LOVE them! I just made my day to see them all again. Sister Gourney, the Relief Society Advisor, was just so happy to see me because it was a familiar face. I was glad to know I knew and trusted all my leaders already, too. Bishop Robbins was pretty surprised to see me in the audience, and since I'm the only one he knew frmo before, he liked to pick on me. He's so funny. DaNae came to church with me because she'd slept in and missed her meeting time. She left after sacrament to go to Santaquin.

Church seemed pretty long, and I was really tired for some reason, even though I'd slept in. After church I made my famous cookies, then took little nap and so did DaNae (she was back from Santaquin). At 5 we had dinner with some of the other RAs. DaNae came too. It was at Trish's apartment, and Jared and Amy came besides me and DaNae. It was fun. We had spaghetti and bread and couscous and my cookies :) Yum. Then I called my dad for a bit to say Happy Father's Day and chat, and went to ward prayer at 6. That lasted about a half hour. Then I had a building meeting at my apartment right after. Only like 7 girls showed up, which was pretty depressing, but I just need to advertise it more and maybe pick a better time/place.

This week I plan on going around and having mini "interviews" with each of the girls to find out stuff about them and try to learn names. I'm also going to make note cards to learn all of their names with their faces. I hope I can do it fast. It already seems like I don't know anyone, which is essentially true. But I like the people I've met so far :)

I was trying to go to bed early tonight, but seeing as it was still light out at 830 (yeah, I was that tired) I couldn't fall asleep. So I decided to type this in hopes of getting sleepy. But now I'm hungry which is not very good. We'll see what happens. I have class tomorrow at noon, and work tomorrow night from 8 to midnight. Hope class goes well and I can get the stuff done I want to!

Love and miss you all!

Playing in the Rain

Today I did a lot of random things.

I started off the day making a meal menu for myself. I plan to go to Walmart tonight, and I need a plan for how to spend my money. I didn't eat very well last year, so I want to do better starting now!

I was on-call all morning from 9-1, so I had to be in Wyview and available, I mostly just hung around the apartment.

Then I headed up to campus to try and send a letter, but the post office was closed so I just used a computer to make little flyers for my residents telling them how they can contact me. Then I caught a bus home. It's a little inconvenient that the bus only comes every hour on Saturdays, but I'll live :)

Then I went and passed those out. It's been raining for a while, so I was eating food and such.

Then Amy, one of the other RAs here at Wyview invited me to come out and play in the rain. We ran around knocking on doors trying to recruit people and ended up with a group of 8. We played missionary tag out on the wet grass, which was very slippery. All of us had some pretty good falls. It was a blast. I think those freshman loved it. I want to get girls and guys together and do stuff like that more often :) It's so random and fun, and freshman often don't know what to do with themselves at the beginning of the year.

I don't remember if I mentioned this, but I met my new apartment-mate last night. Her and I talked for a while. Her name is Diana, pronouced "Dee-anna." I was a little worried because she's 24, but I really, really like her. She's from Bulgaria, and she's been at BYU since Winter semester. She's so sweet and shy, but I love her. She's been gone all day, so I think she might be spending a lot of time with her boy friend or something. But she invited me to go to the dollar theater about once a week like she usually did with the other RA. I'm excited!

So, my new bed was elevated when I got here. I liked it because there was a lot more room for storage under it then. But then I slept in it. Oh boy is that scary. It's like a bunk bed without the guard rail. I woke up in the middle of the night on the edge and almost fell off. So scary. I hugged the wall the rest of the night. Guess I'll be doing that for a while until I get used to it. lol

This is the new purse/bag DaNae picked up for me from the bookstore earlier this week. I love it! So cute! DaNae says I'm a hippie. I say I'm a wanna-be hippie. lol

Well, I guess that's it. Tonight when DaNae gets off work we are going to get Frosty's for the Father's Day Weekend fundraiser Wendy's is doing. Plus, we just really love Frosty's! Then we are going to her brother's empty townhouse in Pleasant Grove because some of the food I gave DaNae when I went home is there and I'm gonna get it back. And then we are going grocery shopping at Walmart. Woot! Fun night, eh?

I'm the defender of a muddy meadow where I live as a butcher (aka what does your name mean?)

Kellie from my ward last year did this on her blog and I thought it was so cool! So I decided to do it, too. :)

Wonder what your first or last name means? Look it up!

From babynames.com and meaning-of-names.com

Lovely, isn't it? Hahaha.
I LOVE my last name! Never found a better one, not yet at least....

So I guess this makes me the defender of a muddy meadow where I live as a butcher. LOL

Last Free Day

So, starting tomorrow I will officially be an RA. I'm not quite sure exactly how I feel about that yet. Still seems a little intimidating to me. I feel like I still need my own RA, but I guess that's what the Hall Advisors are for. I'm excited to meet all the girls and start work, so it should be good.

I can move in tomorrow around noon. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to carry all my crap into my apartment. I don't have guy friends to help me out this time, but I'm sure I'll figure out something, even if I have to do it all myself. Eek. I'll be glad to finally be settled, though, and to have ALL my stuff back. I didn't realize how much I take for granted, things like knives, spoons, can openers, shower curtains, towels, hair dryers, sheets, and more (all things I didn't have this week until I borrowed some of them from DaNae today).

I went to the bookstore today and bought a planner. I'm going to need to keep track of things better now and be super, super responsible. I contemplated buying a new bag that I use for a purse, but decided not to. Then I got home and found out the bag I have now got sauce on the inside from the J-dawg's hot dog I had wrapped up and put in it earlier. So I called DaNae and had her pick the one up for me from the bookstore. LOL

After I went to the bookstore I caught a bus to the Provo City Library where I checked out Escape, by Carolyn Jessop, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I had started Escape in Orlando, but didn't finish it before I had to come to Provo, so I picked up again where I'd left off. I'm a little more than halfway through it. It's so good! It's a lot like Infidel, which I raved about on a previous blog. I hope to finish it soon before classes start and I get bogged down with everything else.

I've been reading Escape since I got home. DaNae came by to pick up her hair dryer which she'd let me borrow. A little after she left I got a knock on the door and it was Shauna, one of the Hall Advisers. Apparently she didn't realize I was staying there, and thought I was a "squatter." She was all ready to tear into me when I opened the door, then she realize who I was. lol Oops...

Besides that my night has been pretty uneventful. I'm about to hit the sack so I can get up a little early tomorrow and go up to campus for a bit then pack my apartment and call Christina to help me move. I'm starting to really miss having so many people around, especially all my good friends from my ward last year. Hopefully I can make as good friends in my new ward. It's great to have DaNae, but she's got work and classes and stuff that takes up a good amount of her time, and she doesn't live across the hall anymore. I really miss being able to walk across the hall or the parking lot and see my friends. But, I have hope that this all will get better once the semester really starts. It will be good to have distractions like school and work, too.

Man, I just realized how tired I am, and I don't know why the heck I am forcing myself to be up when I feel like this, so talk to you all later!

Love and miss you all! <3

Day of Productivity

Well, since I have nothing better to do, I decided to blog about my day while I wait for my laundry to be done.

This amazing day started off with me staying in bed until 1 something. Why get out of bed if you have nothing to do?

Then I bummed around my apartment for a bit, and got ready to go up to campus. I had decided to go change my major and to buy my D&C Student Manual for my summer term class.

I went to the Humanities office in the JFSB and talked to a counselor there who just happened to have a specialty in the major I was switching to. So, I declared American Studies as my major. It's like a combination of history, politics, economics, geography, arts, and just about everything else about America. Apparently it's really flexible, and you can basically take any classes that have to do with America and get it to count toward the major. Sweet, huh? Now, I just need to decide if I want to pick a focus, or take a broad range of classes. I'm thinking the latter.

One of the things you can do to get major credit is to do the Washington DC Seminar, where you spend a semester in DC and do an internship. So, I went to their office in the SWKT and talked to the counselor there about the program. She gave me the basics, and let me look at the directory of internships they try to help place us in. It sounds really cool, and I think I might consider it for the future if I decide to stick with this major. :)

After that, I went to the bookstore and bought my D&C Student Manual for the D&C class I'm taking this summer. It should be pretty good; I've already learned cool things just by flipping through the pages. Hopefully it's not too intense of a class, either.

Then I went to the computer lab in the JKB and played around with my class schedule for the fall now that I have a major to focus on. As of right now (and I say this because I've changed my fall schedule probably 10 times already) I am registered for: American Studies, Economics 110, New Testament (with Stephen E. Robinson - the guy who wrote Believeing Christ), Career Exploration, a Law Lecture Series, and LDS Temples. I'm way super excited for fall! I should be done with college by 2011. I'll be gradating the same time Sara's graduating from high school. Crazy!

That's about all I did today. Since I've been home I've worked on creating a photo book online because I got a code to order a free one. I just had to pay shipping. I'm excited for it. It's pictures from my freshman year. I hope it turns out good!

RA-ing starts on Friday, and I'm starting to think that I need to be more prepared for the residents, but I haven't really been told much. Oh well, things will work out I guess. Well, I let's hope my laundry is done by now, and that I can go to bed soon!

Love and miss you all already.

Back in Provo

So I'm back in Provo now. For those of your who don't know, I got a job as an RA at BYU. I flew in Monday morning. I got to the airport in Orlando around 5 and got to Salt Lake around noon. My BFFL (Best Friend For Life) picked me up from the airport and took me to Provo.

I have a temporary or "interim" apartment for this week until I can move into my actual apartment. Here are some pictures of what it's like to live somewhere with limited resources and when you're moving out in a few days.

It's sort of like a hotel, except there's no TV, no sheets, no shampoo or soap, and no towels.

My suitcases threw up

How I stay sane (there's no one to talk to here)

The other room in the apartment is empty. It's a little depressing.
I considered sleeping in a different bed every night this week :)

I made myself at home in the bathroom, as you can tell

I spent my night doing door name tags for all my new residents.
They move in Friday.

The extent of my refidgerated food at this time.
A hunk of cheese, and half of a Subway sub.

The rest of my food. I'm living large!

No sheets. It makes the bed a lot colder for some reason.

Alexa, the officially trained RA!
Yeah, today was RA training for all the new RA's for the summer. I showed up at 8 like I was told, and so did another guy, Jared. Turns out training wasn't until 9, so they sent us to get food at the Cannon Center. It was a long walk, plus we had to eat, then walk back. All in less than an hour. Well, needless to say, we were late coming back, so Ben Hess drove out to find us and picked us up on the sidewalk to drive us the rest of the way.

We had training with all the other RA's for summer, no matter what complex they will be in (Wyview, Helaman, or Heritage) and that was 9 to noon. We did fun activities to get to know each other and were trained on community development and stuff like that.

Then we had a 2 hour lunch break, and I wasn't too hungry, so I slept, then finished my snack wrap and fries from McDonald's last night and picked up a few snacks at the Creamery.

Training for just the Wyview RA's started at 2. We met with the Hall Advisors, Kim and Shauna. Me and Jared are under Kim, and the other 3 RA's are Sam, Karina, and Trisha who are under Shauna. Both the HAs were so nice. We had a good time getting to know them and learning more about our specific schedules and what we need to do when we are scheduled and stuff like that. The Ben trained us on check-ins which we have to do Friday and Saturday. I work Friday from 4 to 8 with Karina and am on-call Saturday morning from 9 to 1.

Other than that, I have RA class Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 for the rest of the semester (not this Thursday, though), and staff meetings every Tuesday nights at 8pm, and a 1-on-1 meeting with my HA every Tuesday. I am scheduled to rove one night about every 7 days. My first is Monday night. It's not too difficult, which is nice. Besides that, most of my hours come from spending time with the girls and planning community standards and programs (activities). It seems like it's going to be really nice. And I love the other RAs. We had a great time.

After we got trained on check-ins (which involved Ben acting like different residents coming to get checked who each had a weird personality and difficult needs-- it was quite entertaining and we laughed a lot, plus it was good practice), we went to the BYU Bookstore together in a campus van to get supplies to make name tags for the doors for our new residents. We got food too. Then I worked on my name tags and got those all done. So, basically I don't have anything to do for the next two days. An ideas what I could do with limited transporation? I guess I could always go to the RB pools and the temple and go bowling or something.

Man, I am so tired, but I am staying up for some weird reason. Oh well. Miss you all already! Love ya!

Guyana Money

I have a friend serving his mission in Guyana, South America right now. He's in the West Indies Mission. His name is Eddie Coronado, or Elder Coronado now I guess :)

He was in my 3rd grade class and, man, was he a trouble maker! Haha. One day I heard him say something to a friend about "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" and I was shocked! I told my mom I thought he was a member, but she couldn't believe it because I'd told her about all the "bad" things he'd done. Plus, we'd never seen them at church. Turns out I find out later that we was attending the Spanish branch in out Stake!

Well, he turned out good in the end. He's such a nice guy. He went to a different high school, and I made friends with his girlfriend who went to Timber Creek before I knew they were dating. When I made the connection I thought it was awesome! They're both so sweet. She wasn't a member, but she converted right before he left for his mission a little less than a year ago and he got to baptize her. I ran into her at church on my first Sunday back this summer, and we talked for a while. She was going to get her patriarchal blessing that night. It's so neat to see her doing well in the Church.

I've gotten 2 letters from Eddie since I've been home for the summer (I just got his address from Lissette his girlfriend), and the first time I open the envelope to find 20 Guyana dollars:

Then I got this in his next letter just yesterday!

Hahaha, ok, so luckily he remembered to tell me that they are worth 10 US cents, and 50 US cents respectively. Darn. Oh well. I still think the money looks awesome, and I want to start a foreign currency collection.

Did I mention I love missionaries??

I got a JOB!

Ok, so this is a pretty spontaneous announcement, sorry to spring it on your so randomly, but it just got sprung on me, too. I got a job in Provo as an RA (Resident Assistant- I'm in charge of a building of girls living at BYU), and will be leaving in a week and a half.

There, I said it. :/

Yesterday I got a call from the manager of the apartment complex where I lived on campus at BYU last year. I had previously applied to be an RA for Spring and Summer terms this year, but turned down the job offer when I decided to come home for my (non-existant) job at Regal. Of course, then, when I found out I really didn't have a job at Regal, I was all upset that I'd turned down the RA job. So, I called back the housing office, asking if there was an opening for summer term, possibly to continue Fall/Winter. That was about a month ago, and I hadn't heard back yet, so I'd pretty much given up on that. But then yesterday I get the call, and he offered me a position for summer term! I thought about it over night, talked about it with my parents, and decided to accept it. It's a great position and good pay, plus it will let me look for a job for the Fall out there, too.

The position starts June 19, and I need to be there for training June 16th. My flight leaves Monday, June 15th at 7 in the morning. I'm really pretty sad that I have to leave so soon, and just as I was getting used to the idea of being home. I have only about a week and a half left in Orlando. (So if you want to hang out with me, it had better happen soon!) You can be sure I'll be making the most of my last week and a half!

I'm sure going to miss you all again.
